I really liked this article by Teddy! I definitely think it would be a great topic for discussion.

I definitely understand the view point, and as Teddy stated, with moderation, the class competition is manageable. But I, too, would much rather have a united school, involving all classes. We're trying to create an environment that is comfortable because this is where students spend the next four years of their life. This is a milestone, and it sucks if it feels like a waste. However, it's interesting that I do not actually agree with the last bit: To an adult, age is just a number. To a child, age is everything but. I think that stood out so much because I could think of a large number of people to whom that didn't apply. We've got such a wide variety of students, but what I've experienced quite often is that students truly want to just live everything to their upmost potential. Often times, that includes taking risks without the hindrances of old age. For some teens, age is everything. It is utilized to command unwarranted respect and authority. For others, it is a hindrance - it is too inscribed into one's identity. As for elders, there are some who take it in too much, and those who disregard it completely. I don't want to get into specific examples, just because I have ACT tomorrow (haha!), but I do believe things vary. I do not believe we should create pre-conceived notions based on age. But at the same time, I agree with Teddy in that age is often times misused.

Sorry for the lack of eloquence. But keep up the good work, enjoying the articles! I'm really excited for inflight this year because I've actually never paid attention to it before, but this year is definitely bringing something new!

There is nothing inherently wrong with drinking or smoking - just because it makes you act differently does not make it bad. It sounds like you didn't even try it, so you don't actually know whether these things can be fun or not. As a high-schooler who goes to parties, I can say that I actually enjoy drinking and smoking. I enjoy having fun and socializing. I don't know what kind of "crazy activities" you expected to see. Maybe a murder mystery party on a larger scale? Well most parties are just people talking and drinking. There's also music and even dancing sometimes. They might not be magical happenings, but people can all get enjoyment out of these things. So maybe next time you want to pass judgement on high schoolers who enjoy going to parties, you should participate in what they're doing instead of standing around for five minutes. You might actually have fun.

P.S. A lot of "facts" espoused by D.A.R.E are just bullshit pieces of propaganda thought up by people who find any mind-altering substance "wrong". If you think for yourself, maybe do some research, you won't think alcohol or weed (if that's what you're referring to by smoking - if you meant tobacco, you're right, that's bad for you) are that terrible.

Good article Jason, but the two sentences at the end of the third paragraph confused me a little. I hope the eagle project goes well.

I like this policy. With kids involved in sports and community service/extra curricular activities, there isn't much time left for homework. If our teachers were doing their job, curriculum could be very well covered during normal school hours and homework could indeed be limited to 20 minutes per class.
Of course, this also means that parents are going to have to take responsibility for their child's behavior because disruptive behavior takes away from class time. The school district will also need to revisit it's discipline policy to have a stricter code and enforcement thereof.
There is a lot to consider but, in this era of shrinking budgets and laggin academic status for CA public schools, change is needed an status quo just won't cut it any longer.

Awesome point of view. Thank you for sharing. Too many kids think they are missing out by not going, or think they are strange for not wanting to go. I think many kids aren't drawn to this type of party scene and should trust their instincts. I'm glad to know there are other teens enjoying friends and hang-time in a positive way.
